Why We Do What We Do
Our Story
We are Susan Land and Jess Connor, both from Chicago, IL, lifelong friends of more than 25 years, mothers, and the founders of Fresh Start Federal Consulting, LLC. Together, we bring both professional expertise and lived experience to our work, with one common mission: to serve, guide, and uplift individuals and families navigating the federal justice system.
Jess is a dedicated scholar with five degrees, including a focus in English, graphic design, and a lifelong passion for advocacy and education. Susan has walked the path herself, having served time in federal prison for Conspiracy to Distribute with a leadership role enhancement. That experience, paired with resilience and a commitment to integrity, fuels her desire to help others avoid pitfalls, access opportunities, and reclaim their lives.
We are not distant consultants. We are mothers, women of faith, and everyday people who believe in second chances. We understand the struggles families face when a loved one enters the system, because we’ve lived it. That’s why we combine compassion, integrity, and hands-on knowledge of programs like the First Step Act and the Second Chance Act to deliver real solutions that make a difference.
At Fresh Start, our commitment goes beyond business. We donate, we give back, and we stand firm in our belief that no one is defined by their worst mistake. Everyone deserves the chance to write a new chapter.
We are here to walk that journey with you. One step, one person, one fresh start at a time.
Our Mission
Our mission is to guide individuals and families through the federal sentencing and prison process with integrity, expertise, and care. Helping them protect their time, dignity, and peace of mind.
We do this by:
Providing clear, step-by-step strategies that clients can follow with confidence.
Using attorney oversight to ensure our work aligns with your legal defense.
Protecting privacy and trust through secure, encrypted communications.
Supporting both clients and their loved ones from the moment we start until they’re settled in their facility.
